Frequently asked questions

Navigating college and career paths can bring up many questions. At 1 STEP UP, we believe in open communication and providing clear, comprehensive answers. Below are some of the most important topics our students, aged 12-21, and their parents frequently ask us about our mentoring and success programs.

What are the most common questions students (ages 12-21) or their parents ask you about mentoring or getting ready for college and a career?

Students and parents often ask:

  • "How do I know what college is right for me?"
  • "What grades or GPA do I need to get into college?"
  • "I don’t know what career I want — where do I start?"
  • "How do I turn my interests into a real career?"
  • "How do we help them stay motivated?"
  • "What career paths fit their personality or strengths?"
  • "Will mentoring help with confidence or motivation?"
  • "What if my child struggles with focus or organization?"
  • "Can you help us understand the IEP process?"
  • "What should I say in an IEP meeting?"
  • "How often do students meet with a mentor?"
  • "Is this virtual or in person?"

What worries or concerns do people often have when they are thinking about a program like yours, and how does 1 STEP UP help with those?

A common concern is, "What if my child feels lost or has no direction?" At 1 STEP UP, we provide personalized guidance to help students discover their strengths, interests, and potential paths, turning uncertainty into clarity. Our mentors work to build confidence and map out actionable steps tailored to each individual.

What underlying motivations do parents often have when seeking mentoring?

Parents often express sentiments such as:

  • "I just want my child to have direction." Our program is designed to provide clear direction and purpose, helping students identify goals and create a roadmap for success.
  • "I want someone to guide them who understands education." Our experienced mentors possess deep knowledge of educational pathways, college admissions, and career development, offering expert guidance.
  • "I want support without judgment." We foster a supportive, non-judgmental environment where students feel safe to explore, learn, and grow, building trust and confidence.

What makes 1 STEP UP's mentoring and success program special or different?

Many programs focus solely on grades or test preparation. 1 STEP UP stands apart by focusing on the whole student — fostering confidence, developing a positive mindset, teaching essential life skills, promoting emotional growth, and planning for long-term success. Students don’t just prepare for college or careers; they learn how to navigate life effectively.

What are the main steps to join your program and start getting support?

Getting started with 1 STEP UP is a straightforward five-step process:

  • Step 1: Complete the Interest Form. Fill out our short online form so we can learn about the student’s goals, academic needs, and areas where support is needed.
  • Step 2: Schedule a Consultation. After submitting the form, families schedule a conversation with 1 STEP UP to discuss strengths, challenges, goals, and program expectations. This is a supportive, no-pressure chat.
  • Step 3: Receive a Personalized Success Plan. Once enrolled, students get a customized mentoring plan covering college/career planning, academic goals, life skills development, and educational advocacy if needed. Every plan is tailored.
  • Step 4: Begin Mentoring Sessions. Students start scheduled sessions, receiving consistent support and guidance. Sessions are typically 45–60 minutes and can be virtual, in-person (based on availability), or hybrid.
  • Step 5: Track Growth & Celebrate Progress. We provide progress check-ins, goal tracking, and ongoing encouragement. Our goal is long-term success.

What you need: A willingness to grow, clear goals (even developing ones), and parent involvement for younger students. You don’t need perfect grades or a set career plan — just a desire to take the next step forward with 1 STEP UP.
